Abraham

The Christmas ball represents a figure of Abraham and it is a part of an educational bauble figurine
collection called “Old Testament”. It is designed to be hung on a Christmas Tree or exposed on a display stand.
Abraham is presented with a staff and there is a lamb at his feet.

ABRAHAM

Attributes

A shepherd's staff

The staff is a common symbol of a shepherd, and in the Bible it also symbolises the power over
people, leadership, and the ability to work miracles.

A lamb.

The lamb symbolises Isaac whom Abraham did not hesitate to offer in a sacrifice. Stopped by God, he
saw a lamb nearby and he killed it instead of his son. The unfulfilled sacrificial offering of Isaac was a
prototype of martyr’s death of Christ.

What do we remember from the life of Abraham:

  • He was the first Hebrew patriarch, meaning the progenitor of all believers.

  • Christians, Jews, and Muslims consider him to be their forefather.

  • He lived around 2nd millennium BC.

  • Abraham was born in Mesopotamia, but he set off to Canaan- the land promised by God-
    with all his belongings.

  • God assured Abraham that his name would be known all over the world and that he would have descendants as numerous as the stars.

  • Originally his name was Abram. While making a covenant with God, the name was changed
to Abraham- ‘father of a multitude’ by Yahweh himself.

  • At the beginning he was wandering with his nephew Lot, but later they separated because
their herds together were too numerous for the capabilities of one camp.

  • Although he was a pacifist, he defeated the Mesopotamian kings who attacked their former
    vassals, including Lot.

  • He interceded for the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah asking God to spare the cities
    destined for a total destruction.

  • He had three wives: Sarah, they had a son Isaac; Sarah’s handmaiden Hagar, they had a son
Ishmael; after the death of Sarah and sending Hagar away he married Keturah and had six more sons with her.

  • God revealed Abraham that Israelites would be slaves for 400 years in the land to which he is leading them.

  • At the age of 100 he became a father of Isaac who was promised to him by God despite Abraham’s old age.

  • God put Abraham to a test by commanding him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. At the lastmoment he was interrupted by an angel who stopped him from killing the boy.

Characteristics of the character

He is considered to be the first Hebrew patriarch, meaning the progenitor of all believers. Christians,
Jews, and Muslims-the three greatest monotheistic religions- worship him as their forefather.

Originally the patriarch's name was Abram- which was a common name in his homeland. God

Abraham (6)

Originally the patriarch’s name was Abram- which was a common name in his homeland.

God commanded him to change it to Abraham which means ‘father of a multitude’. The covenant withGod also included making the name of Abraham well known all over the world and giving him
descendants as numerous as the stars and as the grains of dust on earth.

The Catholic Church commemorates Abraham on 9th, October. As one of the patriarchs, he is worshipped alike all the saints from New Testament.

What does the Bible tell us about Abraham:

Abraham was called by God to travel to the Promised Land: The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
[Genesis 12, 1-2].

God promised Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars: The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the
dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
[Genesis 13, 14-16].
Abraham heard a prophecy about the slavery of Israelites in Egypt: Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterwards they will come out with great possessions. [Genesis 15, 13-14]

His original name was changed to Abraham, meaning “father of a multitude”: “As for me, this is my
covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. [Genesis 17, 4-5]
Abraham pleaded for mercy for Sodom and Gomorrah: Then Abraham approached him and said:
“Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous
and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” The Lord said,
“If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
[Genesis 18, 23-26]
God gave Abraham and Sarah a son when they were 100 and 90 years old: Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.
Abraham did not hesitate to offer his only son as a sacrifice for God: “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” [Genesis 22, 12]
