The bauble figurine represents Adam and Eve and it is a part of a collection of educational Christmas balls named “Old Testament”. It is designed to be hung on a Christmas Tree or exposed on a display stand.
Adam and Eve are presented with a tree, an apple, and a snake.
Attributes
A tree
The tree is a symbol of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil- the one from which the fruit were forbidden for Adam and Eve.
An apple
The apple is a symbol of the original sin of disobeying God by First Parents.
A snake
The snake symbolises Satan who in the form of a serpent convinced Adam and Eve to disobey God’s command.
What do we remember from the life of Adam and Eve:
- They were the first humans created by God himself. The Genesis describes two ways of the creation.
- They lived in the Garden of Eden– the place of everlasting happiness. They did not suffer and they were immortal.
- The only command they got from God was not to eat fruit from the Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil.
- Eve was the first one to disobey the God’s command because she was deceived by a serpent, and then Adam whom Eva handed the fruit.
- For this sin they were banished from the Garden of Eden and they had to start a new life full of difficulties.
- The Bible mentions three sons of the First Parents: Cain, Abel, and Seth. Cain murdered his brother Abel at the same time becoming the first murderer in the history of humanity.
- After being banished from the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve served God and were blessed with His divine grace: numerous offspring and longevity.
Adam was created as the first one, and Eve was created later, out of the rib taken from Adam’s body while he was sleeping. Adam was glad to see a human being that was a “bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh”.
The First Parents were told to be caretakers of the creation. They could eat fruit from all the trees, except for the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They obeyed the command for some time, but finally the devil in the form of a serpent convinced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. After she did it, she gave the fruit to Adam.
Adam and Eve are the first people created by God.
Adam and Eve are the first people created by God. The name ‘Adam’ means ‘the man’ and also ‘mankind’, ‘Eve’ can be translated as ‘alive’ or ‘the one giving life’.
The Catholic Church commemorates First Parents on the Christmas Eve, 24th December. It is very symbolic- one day we commemorate the first man, who brought original sin to humanity, and the next day we worship The One who redeemed the world.
According to the teachings of the Church, the sin of the First Parents was forgiven thanks to an atonement, further pious life of Adam and Eve, and the Christ’s sacrifice
What does the Bible tell us about Adam and Eve:
They were the first humans created by God himself: So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. [Genesis 1, 27].
The First Parents disobeyed God’s command and ate the fruit from the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil:
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. [Genesis 3, 6].
For the sin of disobedience they were cursed with the difficulties of life and banished from the Garden of Eden:
So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. [Genesis 3, 23].
After they left the Garden of Eden, the First Parents regretted their sin and began the life that pleased God, so God blessed them with his Grace: offspring and longevity:
“After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.” [Genesis 5, 4].
