Isaiah

The Christmas ball represents a figure of Prophet Isaiah and it is a part of an educational bauble figurine collection called “Old Testament”. It is designed to be hung on a Christmas Tree or exposed on a display stand.

Isaiah is presented with a twig, a saw, and a scroll with words “Ecce Virgo concipiet” written on it.

Attributes

A twig

The twig refers to the prophecy in which Jesus is compared to a branch that grows out from the trunk of Jesse, the father of king David.

A saw

The saw refers to a rabbinic vision of the death of the Prophet who was cut with a saw. During his suffering he did not even make a sound, but he was praying to the Holy Spirit.

A scroll with
the words

The scroll with the words “Ecce Virgo concipiet” in Latin means ‘Behold, a virgin shall conceive’. That reminds us of the prophecy about Messiah who was born from a virgin.

What do we remember from the life of the prophet Isaiah:

  • He lived in the eight century BC.
  • He received good education in many subjects, so he probably came from an aristocratic family.
  • He was married and had two sons.
  • He served two kings of Israel as an adviser and a prophet.
  • He condemned the moral decay, idolatry, and apparent religiousness of the Hebrews.
  • His prophecies refer to the history of Israel, and especially to the coming of Messiah.
  • He envisioned the rewards that were waiting for people who were obeying the laws given by God, and also the punishments for ignoring them.
Izajasz (11)

Characteristics of the character

The prophecies of Isaiah are mainly related to the future of Israel and Jerusalem. Many of them is connected to the prophesied coming of Messiah. In the Book of Isaiah we can also find the descriptions of the visions of rewards for obedience and punishments for ignoring the laws of God.

His name means "Yahweh is Salvation'.
Isaiah is the greatest prophet of the Old Testament.

Izajasz (7)

He is presented in a long, white tunic and toga as his occupation included political, religious, social and cultural matters.

Readings of the prophecies from the Book of Isaiah are part of the Liturgy of the Word on many days during a year. They are most significant in Advent, because Isaiah was preparing the faithful for coming of Messiah and his prophecies are mostly about this event.

What does the Bible tell us about Isaiah:

He eagerly responded to the call of God: Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?” And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” [Isaiah 6, 8]

He prophesied the remission of sins: […] “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land; but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” [Isaiah 1, 18-20]

The coming of Messiah takes significant place in his visions: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. [Isaiah 7, 14]

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. [Isaiah 11, 1]

He preached the endless love of God: Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. [Isaiah 54, 10]

He prophesied the delights of heaven: The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, […] [Isaiah 65, 25]
