Attributes

A pennant with a cross

The red pennant with a cross is a symbol of the final victory over death.

A blessing gesture

The characteristic blessing gesture, a partially outstretched hand with fourth and little fingers curled inward, symbolises the Trinity and God’s grace.  The three fingers represent the three persons of the Trinity, and the two curled ones symbolise the union of the divine and human natures in the person of Christ.

What do we remember about the life of Jesus Christ:

  • His birth was prophesied many times in Old Testament,  for the first time it was mentioned after banishing Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
  • Both Jesus and his mother were immaculately conceived.
  • At the Annunciation Mary agreed to give birth to the Saviour.
  • Jesus was born in Bethlehem at the time of population census.  He was born in a stable because there were no room for them in the inn. His birth was accompanied by some exceptional signs, e.g. a comet.
  • In accordance with the Jewish Law and tradition, Jesus was presented in a temple on the eighth day.
  • Mary and Joseph together with little Jesus fled to Egypt in order to save him from the massacre of the innocents.
  • 12 year old Jesus went missing during the celebrations of the Passover and then he was found in the temple where he was teaching.
  • He was baptised by his relative- John the Baptist.
  • The first publicly performed miracle was turning water into wine during a wedding in the Cana of Galilee.
  • He had a lot of supporters and followers of which the Twelve Apostles were most important.  And of them Peter was especially important.
  • Jesus’ teachings were mostly focused on love, humility, sacrifice, purity and doing good.
  • He performed a lot of miracles including curing people and reviving the dead ones.
  • At the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor Jesus’ three disciples learned  that He is the Son of God.
  • At the age of 33 he voluntarily gave himself up to passion and death which were preceded by the Last Supper and the prayers in the garden Gethsemane.
  • He was crucified on Pontius Pilate’s order.
  • On the way to Calvary carrying the cross Jesus was comforting the distraught supporters who accompanied him, and on the cross he called the first saint recognised by the Catholic church.
  • After three days he has risen from the dead.  He appeared to Mary Magdalene first and then to his disciples Peter and John and the rest of Apostles.
  • He reappeared many times after the resurrection, also in order to appoint Peter as his earthly successor.
  • Jesus’ disciples witnessed his ascension, and soon after the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles.

Characteristics of the character

Jesus Christ is the key figure of Christianity.  His life is described in the Gospels, his teachings were repeated by apostles and other disciples and they are now preached by the Catholic church and other Christian churches.

The name Jesus was quite common in that time in Palestine. It means "Yahweh is salvation".

Jezus Chrystus (5)

It it most often written in Hebrew as Joshua.  In the Bible we can also find a piece of information that Jesus is also known as Immanuel meaning “God is with us”.

The second part of his name- Christ- means Messiah, anointed by God.

Christians honour Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the Saviour, the second of three persons of the Trinity.  For Muslims Jesus is one of the prophets.

What does the Bible tell us about Jesus:

The first announcement of the birth of Messiah: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. [Genesis 3,15]

Although Jesus birth took place in a stable, it was accompanied by miracles: While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born;  and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.  And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. [Luke 2, 6-12]

As a twelve year-old boy he surprised the wise men with his wisdom: After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.  Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. [Luke 2, 46-47]

The first miracle performed by Jesus was turning water into wine: And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside  and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink;   but you have saved the best till now. [John 2, 9-10]

Among numerous miracles performed by Jesus there was also Raising of Lazarus who was dead for three days:  When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”. The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.  Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go. [John 11, 43-44]

At the Last Supper Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist:  While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”  Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. [Matthew 26, 26-28]

Christ felt afraid just once, shortly before his arrest in the Garden Gethsemane: Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.  Yet not as I will, but as you will. [Matthew 26, 39]

While dying on the cross, Jesus managed to appoint the first saint: Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise. [Luke 23, 43]

The Christ’s death was accompanied by terrifying signs: It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,  for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.  Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”  When he had said this, he breathed his last. [Luke 23, 44-46]

After showing himself to his disciples, Jesus ascended into Heaven:  When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.  While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. [Luke 24, 50-51]
