Mary Magdalene

The bauble figurine represents Saint Mary Magdalene and it is a part of a collection of educational baubles called “New Testament”. It is designed to be hung on a Christmas Tree or exposed on a display stand.

Saint Mary Magdalene is presented with a red egg and a container of ointment in her hands, and a skull at her feet.

Attributes

A skull

The skull symbolises the 30 years that Mary Magdalene spent on a desert, dead to the world.

A red egg

The red egg relates to the legend in which Mary Magdalene came to the emperor Tiberius and told him about Jesus and his Resurrection. But the emperor did not believe her and said that if it was true, then the eggs from the basket carried by one of the servants would turn red. And they did, so Mary took one red egg and handed it to the emperor.

A container of ointment

The container of ointment reminds us of Mary Magdalene washing Jesus’ feet and of perfumed oil she carried to the tomb on the Resurrection day.

What do we remember from the life of Saint Mary Magdalene:

  • she was the most important of all the female followers of Jesus,
  • she, together with Jesus’s mother and some other women, they were witnesses to Jesus’ crucifixion,
  • she was also the first one to discover the empty tomb when she went there to use perfumed oil on Jesus’ body, and she passed the information on to the Apostles,
  • it was Mary Magdalene to whom resurrected Jesus appeared for the first time,
  • different interpretations portray her as a “sinful woman” whom Jesus forgave, and also that seven demons had been driven out of her,
  • in the Christian tradition it is said that Mary Magdalene was so grateful for forgiveness that she washed Jesus feet with her tears and dried them with her hair,
  • in non-biblical descriptions Mary is believed to spend 30 years on a desert, as a penance and to be closer to the God.
  • spędziła 30 lat na pustyni, w ramach pokuty i dla bliższej więzi z Bogiem.

Characteristics of the character

Mary Magdalene is now and again identified as one out of several figures from the Bible. Most often it is said that she was the first one to be healed by Jesus when he had driven seven demons out of her.

Saint Mary’s byname Magdalene means
“coming from the town of Magdala”.

The Catholic Church commemorates Mary Magdalene on 22nd, July. Pope Francis raised the level of this memorial to the liturgical feast by the decree “Apostle to the Apostles”.

Mary Magdalene is a patron saint of the repentants, prisoners, students, gardeners, perfumers, those who suffer from parasitic diseases and children who have problems with walking.

What does the Bible tell us about Saint Mary Magdalene:

She joined Jesus after he healed her: “After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;” [Luke 8, 1-2].

She accompanied Jesus till the end: “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.”[John 19, 25]

She was the one to discover the empty tomb: “Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.” [J 20, 1]

Mary Magdalene was the first one to whom Jesus appeared after His Resurrection: “He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”Jesus said to her, “Mary.”She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.” [J 20, 15-18]
