Our Lady of Licheń
The bauble depicts the figure of Our Lady of Lichen – the Sorrowful Queen of Poland
and is part of a collection of educational baubles.
It is designed to be hung on a Christmas tree or displayed on a stand. Our Lady of Lichensk is depicted wearing an amaranth cloak, a golden gown, with the White Eagle, cradled to her breast, and a royal crown.

What we know about Our Lady of Lichen:
- The Mother of God appeared to Tomasz Klossowski, a soldier mortally wounded in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813.
- She saved his life, commanding him to find her image. Thomas made a pilgrimage for more than 20 years before he succeeded.
- He displayed the Image in a shrine, which began her cult.
- During the cholera epidemic, the Image became famous for its miracles, and the Mother of God healed those praying to her.
- The Image was moved to the Cemetery Chapel in Licheń Stary on September 29, 1852.
- The image is located in the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Licheń in Licheń Stary.
- It is an oil copy of the image of Our Lady of Rokitno Wielkopolskie.
- It was painted in the second half of the 18th century.
- The artist, whose name is unknown, depicted the sorrowful Blessed Virgin Mary on a thin larch board coated with chalk, measuring 15.5 x 9.5 cm.
- The Mother of God is dressed in a long amaranth gown, a golden mantle with symbols of the Passion. On her head is a crown. Mary hugs the White Eagle to her breast.
- The small image, originally intended for private prayers, over time became an object of worship for the faithful. The power flowing from it gives hope to anyone who kneels before it and looks into the eyes of the Blessed Mother. Many people to this day entrust themselves to Mary’s maternal care.
- Through the cause of Our Lady of Lichen miraculous healings are performed not only on the body but also on the soul. This is evidenced by the votive offerings hanging in the chancel of the Lichen basilica, which is an excellent testimony to the prayers and requests heard.

The Mother of God appeared to a wounded soldier, Tomasz Klosowski. After his recovery, during one of his pilgrimages, he found her Image and displayed it in a shrine near Licheń.
After his death, she also appeared to his friend Nikolai Sikka. She called for a change of life, faith in God, and repentance for sins. During a cholera epidemic, she healed many pilgrims to her Image, and the Image itself was moved to a church in Licheń in 1852.
It received the papal crown on August 15, 1967, and Holy Father Paul VI gave the Image the title “Mary – Sorrowful Queen of Poland.” In 1994, the construction of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows began, where the Image has been located since July 2, 2006. On June 7, 1999, Pope John Paul II prayed before it.
The liturgical memory of the Sorrowful Queen of Poland is celebrated on July 2.
