Peter
The bauble figurine represents Saint Peter and it is a part of a collection of educational Christmas balls named “New Testament”. It is designed to be hung on a Christmas Tree or exposed on a display stand.
Saint Peter is presented with two keys and a book. There is also a rooster at his feet.
Attributes
Two keys
The two keys are the symbol of power Saint Peter has over people on Earth and in heaven.
A book
The book is a typical attribute of the apostles. It also refers to the epistles written by Peter.
A rooster
The rooster is a reference to the denial of Jesus Christ by Peter. Jesus foretold it by saying that on the night of Jesus’ arrest Peter will deny him three times before a rooster crows.
What do we remember from the life of Saint Peter:
- he was a fisherman when Jesus called to follow Him- Peter left his fishing nets at once and became Jesus’ disciple.
- He accompanied Jesus during the key moments of Jesus’ public activity. He was a witness to revival of a girl and the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.
- together with the rest of Apostles sat at the Last Supper
- he was present during Jesus’ prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and when the soldiers arrested Jesus.
- At night, right after Jesus imprisonment, he denied Jesus three times, because he was afraid of his own life.
- informed of the situation by Mary Magdalene, he was the first one to enter the empty tomb,
- He talked to resurrected Jesus and was blessed by the Holy Spirit.
- Jesus asked Peter to be his representative here on Earth.
- After the Ascension of Jesus, Peter continued the missionary activity by baptising and evangelising.
- He died a martyr’s death in Rome during the persecution of Christians by the emperor Nero. He was crucified upside down.
- a basilica was built in the place of his death.
The real name of Saint Peter was Simon. The name Peter, meaning a rock, was given to him by Jesus. When he together with his brother and other relatives were fishing in the Sea of Galilee, they were called to serve the Saviour.
Saint Peter, the Apostle. His true name was Simon. The name Peter, meaning a rock, was given to him by Jesus Christ.
The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Peter on 29th, June, which is a symbolic date of his martyr’s death.
Saint Peter is a patron saint of many cities, for example Rome, Avignon, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Geneva, Nantes, Poznań and Międzyzdroje in Poland, and others.
He is also a patron saint of fishermen, sailors, water rescuers of WOPR*, stonemasons, watchmakers, and blacksmiths. People usually pray to him when one is bitten by a snake, has an attack of epilepsy or fever.
What does the Bible tell us about Saint Peter:
He did not hesitate to give up his life and follow Jesus: “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. [Matthew 4, 19-20]
He deeply believed that Jesus is the Saviour, and because of that he was appointed to be Jesus’ representative on Earth: “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” [Matthew 16, 15-19]
He was one of the few who accompanied Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane: He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. [Mark 14, 33]
Resurrected Jesus repeated his will that Peter should be the first pope: When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” [John 21, 15]
Peter for the first time baptised the pagans (non- Jews): Then Peter said, “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. [Acts 10, 47]
