Sarah

The bauble figurine represents Sarah and it is a part of an educational bauble figurine collection called
“Old Testament”. It is designed to be hung on a Christmas Tree or exposed on a display stand.
Sarah is presented with a bowl and a scroll.

Attributes

A bowl

The bowl refers to the food and drinks with which Sarah welcomed her guests: God and the angels who
in the form of wanderers announced that soon she would give birth to a son.

A scroll

The scroll reminds us that Sarah is mentioned in the Bible.

What do we remember from the life of Sarah:

  • She was a relative and a wife of Abraham whom God promised descendants as numerous as the stars.
  • She was of an exceptional beauty – and because of that she got to a harem of Pharaoh and Palestinian king.
  • For many years she was barren, so she convinced Abraham to take her handmaiden for a wife.
  • When God in the form of a wanderer visited Abraham and told Sarah she was going to have a baby, she laughed because of her old age.
  • But the promise was already made and later Sarah gave birth to a son, Isaac, whose grandchildren were the progenitors of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
  • Abraham loved his wife very much and was mourning after her death.
Sara (7)

Characteristics of the character

She was born with the name Sarai. She was Abraham’s wife and the mother of his son, Isaac. The name given to her by God- Sarah, means a princess.
In the Catholic Church the Bible readings about Sarah are included in the Liturgy of the Word on 27th, December.

Sarah was both Abraham's relative and his wife.

Sara (3)

Sarah was both Abraham’s relative and his wife. She shared with him the difficulties of a nomadic life, which they led on God’s command. He had to travel with the whole family, servants, and all their belongings from Mesopotamia to Palestine. She was originally called Sarai, but God ordered Abraham to call her Sarah, meaning princess.

The wife of the first Hebrew Patriarch was exceptionally beautiful. Because of this fact, Abraham was worried that there would be people ready to kill him in order to get her. As a result he often introduced Sarah as his sister. Because of this misinformation the Egyptian Pharaoh and the Palestinian King integrated her in the harems. It was only for a while, however, because she was returned to Abraham as soon as different disasters and calamities started to happen to them.

What does the Bible tell us about Sarah:

The greatest kings and lords admired Sarah’s beauty: When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman. And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to
Pharaoh and she was taken into his palace. He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired
sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.
[Genesis 12, 14-16].

Sarah very much wanted Abraham to be happy, so she suggested he should take her handmaiden for a wife so at least she could give him children: so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. [Genesis 16, 2-4].

At the beginning Sarah did not believe that she could have a child in her old age: So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” [Genesis 18, 12-14].

By the God’s blessing Sarah had a son when she and Abraham were already old. Now the Lord was
gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became
pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. [Genesis 21, 1-3].
