St Hubert

The deer with a crucifix between its antlers refers to the legend about the miraculous convertion of St. Hubert during hunting on Good Friday.
What do we remember from the life of Saint Hubert:
- He was born in 655 in Gascony (France) and died in 727 in Tervuren (Belgium).
- He was an aristocrat as he descended from the House of Merovingians.
- Hunting was his greatest passion since early youth.
- At the age of 14 he saved his father’s life when they were hunting for a bear in Pyrenees.
- When he was 18 he became a courtier to Pepin II, later the ruler of Franconia (today’s Germany).
- He married the daughter of Count Dagobert of Leuven, Floribiana, who died while giving birth to their only son, Floribert.
- After the death of his wife he lost himself in hunting, he also lived a carefree life and ignored God’s commandments.
- One day while he was hunting on Good Friday, he saw a stag with a crucifix between its antlers and heard a voice of Christ telling him to convert.
- He then went to Maastricht where he began theological studies under the bishop Lambert.
- He did missionary work in Ardennes and Brabant (today region of Belgium and the Netherlands).
- After the death of Lambert he was ordained a bishop of Maastricht by the pope Sergius I.
- He moved the capital of the bishopric to Liege.
- As a bishop he continued converting pagans, distributing wealth to the poor and miraculously healing the sick.
- He died peacefully in his residence, but just before his death he made a speech telling people to lead a good life.
- Soon after his death he was canonised as a saint.
- Several years after Hubert’s death his body was exhumed and it turned out that it was not affected by the decay at all and what is more, it had a pleasant scent.
- Nearly one hunderd years later his body was exhumed once more and it was moved to Saint-Hubert (today’s Luxembourg).
- The tomb of Saint Hubert is a destination of many pilgrimages because it is believed that touching his robes has healing properties.
- Polska Kapituła Odznaczeń Łowieckich (Polish Chapter of Hunting Orders) awards Medal of Saint Hubert for exceptional achievements in promoting hunting culture and art.
Hubert was born in an aristocratic family of Merovingians who had a decisive influence on the politics of Frankish state from the 5th until 8th century. He also received a good education and an access to courtly entertainment such as hunting.
The name Hubert is of German origin
and means "bright intellect".
The bishop from Liege in Belgium was named Hubert, he is the Catholic saint and a patron of hunters.
The feast day of Saint Hubert is on 3rd, November and it is especially celebrated by people whose occupation is connected with a forest, such as foresters and huntsmen. This day in Poland is named Hubertus or Hubertowiny.
Saint Hubert is the patron saint of riders, shooters, furriers, sportsmen, and even mathematicians. He is called upon by sleepwalkers, epileptics, and people bitten by dogs who ask for quick recovery and protection from rabies.
